The only temporary stumbling block was realising (which should have been obvious) that not only do all submenus have to be defined before the main menu, but all sub-submenus must be defined before the submenu to which they are attached, and so on up the tree. And, thanks to LMSL, it was much easier than I expected: very straightforward to build each submenu as a text array, using the appropriate primary key as the name of each of the many nested submenus. Therefore creating a menu tree for the data set I’m working on was a higher priority for me than a search form. The target folder can either be a part of the current selection, or a folder in one of your custom folders. In a group of databases containing structured data, from which it is possible to analyse the tables to present it in a hierarchical manner, I find it useful to present that hierarchy as a menu tree - just as I almost always find a hierarchical menu (such as Classic Menu or Folder Glance) the quickest way to locate a file on my various hard drives. ![]() ![]() One more thing, sort of related, because there is room here to add it. You can see the love is there in the meanings of the symbol. We didn’t create this because we hate people with autism, just the opposite. There are people saying this is a symbol of hate. Even hope that one day we will be judged not by the symptoms of the autism, but by the content of our character. Hope for awareness, hope for acceptance, hope for understanding, hope for a cure for those who may want it. The brightness of the colors represent hope. And everyone anywhere in between all of these things. Those who are finding their way and those who are not. Those in the institutions and those who live independently. The young to the old, the cruel to the kind, the talkative to the non-verbal. From those who have an interest here to those who have another interest there. Everything from the most severe cases to those who are wildly successful. The different colors of the puzzle pieces represent the vast diversity of the autism spectrum. So again, the pieces speak to the condition of autism itself, not to any specific individual who has it. What we are saying here is there are still a few things that we haven’t quite figured out yet about how all of this works. We are not saying, as some believe, that “people with autism are a puzzle.” We are not saying they are “missing pieces.” We are not saying they are “a puzzle to be solved.” We never said any of that. ![]() Understand we are talking about autism itself, not any individual who may be diagnosed. The interlocking pieces represent the unknowns of autism. (Example: one mother told me that for her it represented the missing pieces of her life that her child filled in for her.) Below is what the puzzle piece means - OFFICIALLY. Over those years, several people have put their own unique meaning to what it represents. The puzzle piece ribbon was created back in 1999, some 22 years ago. I’d like a moment to clarify just a few things. I was there in the the room that day and I had both input and a vote. One of the things they are saying is that no one with autism was involved in its creation. ![]() There has been some misinformation spreading out there on the web lately about the puzzle piece awareness ribbon and what it means and represents. ![]() ![]() Actually these decimal tabs can be aligned on any character you choose like the x in 2×4. They come in four kinds: left, right, centered, and decimal. Typesetting tabs are much more powerful than typewriting tabs. Tabular constructionĬustom horizontal spacing should normally be done with tabs. This means that an en should be used as a blank when lining up numbers (an em for two numbers) for accountants and bookkeepers. Another fact to bear in mind is that lining numbers are normally an en space wide. Fixed spaces remain proportionally consistent. For example, they should always be used for custom hand-spacing, because the spacebar can vary proportionally if you change the point size. InDesign’s thin space is an eighth of an em, and the hair space is one–twenty-fourth of an em. These spaces are now defined as follows: an em space is the square of the point size an en space is the same height, of course, but half as wide and a thin space varies. ![]() Originally these characters were blanks the width of an m, n, and l, respectively. A quarter space, third space, and sixth space have been added and more. InDesign has all four types plus several more. The el space is long gone it is now usually called a thin space. These quads came in three widths: em, en, and el, plus what were called hair spaces. The characters used to do this were blank slugs, called quads, that were a little lower than type-height so they would not print accidentally. When type was composed, it was brought out to a rectangle no matter what the alignment was-right, left, centered, or justified. The problem of predictable spaces has been solved by using some more letterpress solutions. As a result, you never really know how wide a spacebar character will be. But the word spacing still varies line by line.īut aside from justification issues, word spaces are different from paragraph to paragraph whenever size, font, or defaults change. InDesign works hard to minimize this by justifying the entire paragraph as a whole. Most software gives large variations from line to line. You can see how this left-over space is spread throughout the line in the bottom portion of the graphic. Look at the colored boxes on the first and third line above. What this means is that the spaces on every line are a different width in justified copy. But there are some real problems with this. If the last word does not reach the zone, the length of the zone is divided and added to the spaces in the line (any additional space is divided and added as letterspacing between every letter in the line). When the last word that fits in a line ends in this justification zone, any remaining space in the column width is evenly divided and added to the word spaces in the line. ![]() When you are setting a line of justified type, you are dealing with a justification zone. Finally, word spacing varies with every line when setting justified copy. Page layout programs give you very precise control over word spacing. More than this, word spacing is one of the defaults that should be set to your standards. This is one reason why the first thing you usually have to do with secretarial copy is eliminate the double spaces. Because of typewriter-based training, most people accustomed to word processors do most of their horizontal spacing with multiple spaces. This is not a problem with typewriters because they only have one size and one font. This space also changes with point size, of course. First, the word space character in various fonts varies in width. In fact, in type, the space band is often a different size than it was the last time you hit the key. ![]() This is because every character in monospaced type is the same width-even the space. On a typewriter, the spacebar is a known quantity. Spaces cause many other problems for people trained in typewriting. ![]() ![]() ![]() Plus to have a large selection of EF-S lens selection without resorting to an adapter.
